Demand Forecasting Data Visualization

Role
Lead Designer (6 weeks)
Goal
Design a web-based dashboard offering for real-time, accurate demand forecasting across various industries
Context

In today's fast-paced business environment, accurate demand forecasting is crucial for optimizing supply chains and labor allocation. Traditional forecasting methods often fall short, relying on outdated data and manual processes. This creates an opportunity for a more dynamic, automated solution that can provide real-time, accurate forecasting across various industries.

Challenge

As the lead designer, I was tasked with creating a web-based dashboard for demand forecasting. The challenge was multifaceted: How might we create views that allow seamless data analysis for sales performance by comparing products and forecasting models?

  1. Design a data-heavy reporting tool adaptable to any industry.

  2. Present complex information in a high-level, accessible format for non-technical analysts.

  3. Enable easy comparison between products and forecasting models.

  4. Balance comprehensive data display with intuitive user experience.

Initial Iteration

I began by collaborating with the product manager to define the minimum viable functionalities and data requirements. This initial phase was characterized by ambiguity in content placement and information hierarchy.

Final Iteration

With the necessary data defined, I experimented with different groupings of information and comparison layouts. This iteration was validated with internal stakeholders. I paid special attention to accessibility with special attention to visualizing data for color blind audiences.

Usability

The original scope did not account for a usability test, however I advocated when the design was finished to get a volunteer to run a usability study. I was able to get an interview with an analyst who fit the type of user who will use the dashboard.

Reflections
  • This project reinforced that stakeholders are not the end-users. Real feedback from actual users is invaluable in creating an effective tool.

  • This project became the first product offering for our firm. Even though this project came out of an opportunity in the market, there’s still room to validate product-market fit by socializing this with potential clients. I continued to support go-to-market efforts after designing this project.
